Shochu made from barley (Mugi). Dry, light with distinctive flavour. Crisp & clean. Goes well with tempura. Very easy to drink. Too easy.
We're not sure where the name 'Oisa' came from but when we were at the festival held in Gozenshu's home town (Katsuyama, near Maniwa) we observed a crazy festival with dozens of carts manned by 20-30 men ramming each other. (Honest). And throughout the contest there would be chants of 'Oisa! Oisa! Oisa! Oisa!'. A frenzied chant building into a crescendo until the massive carts rammed each other followed by pushing by sweating men at the back of each pack. Oisa. Maybe it means 'Go hard!'. Or 'Hooray!' Whatever it is, the shochu has a new meaning for us now.
